Wrinkles - Improve Your Skin with Botox!
What is Botox?
Botox improves and in many cases eliminates wrinkles in the skin caused by repetitive muscle contractions. Skin contains the substances elastin and collagen which keep the skin elastic and decrease wrinkling. Unfortunately, advancing age and sun exposure decrease the amount of elastin and collagen in the skin. This decrease results in progressive wrinkling of the skin over time. When we are young, our skin contains high levels of elastin and collagen which resist the wrinkling effect of repetitive muscle contraction. But as we age, repetitive muscle contraction takes its toll and wrinkles begin to appear. Botox works by relaxing the underlying muscles and weakening the repetitive contractions that are causing the skin to wrinkle.
The effects of Botox generally last 3 to 4 months. Botox is measured in units. An average Botox injection session involves 30 to 40 units. Cosmetic doses of Botox are very safe. There is no chance cosmetic doses of Botox will cause botulism. Botox works by weakening muscles so, if it is put in the wrong place, a less than optimal result may occur. That is why it is important to go to an experienced Botox injector who knows the potential pitfalls very well. The results of properly injected Botox are truly impressive.

What Does the Procedure Involve?
Dr. Manning takes photographs at the initial visit and then marks each potential injection site with a removable marker. He likes to mark the proposed injection sites to ensure injection symmetry and so that the exact cost of the session can be accurately calculated before the injection session begins. Dr, Manning charges by the unit of Botox used so the cost of the session can be easily customized to exactly how much the patient wants to spend.
Dr. Manning uses a very small 31 guage ultra fine needle so injection pain and risk of bruising is minimal. The injection sites are prepped with alcohol. Dr. Manning pinchesthe muscles to be injected to ensure the needle stays in the muscle and does not hit the bone below the muscle which results in a crunching sensation and is painful. The risk of bruising is highest in the crow's foot area because the skin is quite thin and there are many veins located there. Dr. Manning uses a device called a vein light to identify veins beneath the skin in this area that can not be seen otherwise but, if hit, would result in bruising at the corner of the eyes.
What to Expect After the Procedure
It is not unusual to see small red whelps at the injection sites. They typically disappear within an hour or so. Dr. Manning likes to follow-up on all new Botox patients 2 weeks after their initial injection session. Photographs are taken and any touch-ups are done at that time. Dr. Manning prefers to be conservative with all new patients until he is sure of the exact result the patient is looking for. It is much better to add a few units at a follow-up session than be overly aggressive at the first visit.
